I Lola

2010

I Lola (part of the Virtual Vanitas series), the title of the artwork refers to the neo dystopian science fiction movie “I Robot”, where anthropomorphic robots live alongside with humans, the artwork also evokes the iconic gynoid character named Maria in fritz Lang’s epic movie Metropolis. I lola denotes the eternal binding relationship between the beautiful and the monstrous self, as a metaphor for order and chaos, virtually vs. materiality, questioning the role of our humanity and identity in the dawn of an overwhelming  digital world. The steampunk iconography of the work resembles an exoskeleton a parallel to samurai costumes and it is made from an assortment of found images on the internet, such as mechanical scraps from all shorts machinery, tools and luxury objects in order to assemble a satin dress signifying artificiality as our a new second skin and cultural construct, an extension of our corporeality.
